HISTORY OF THE BAND

Bob Hill

The Haywood Community Band was founded in 2002 by Bob Hill, our present Director Emeritus. There were only seven people who attended that first organizational meeting, which was held at the FolkMoot Center in Hazelwood, N.C. The band eventually grew to an active membership of 35 to 40 musicians. Not long thereafter, our founder, Bob Hill, had to work through some medical issues. After his recovery, he turned the directorship over to his friend and fellow musician, Dick Trevarthen. We currently have some of the finest former band directors in Haywood County leading our band.

The band performs in concert on a regular basis every third Sunday from May through October at the Maggie Pavilion in Maggie Valley, N.C. for the Maggie Valley Civic Association. It has also performed for a Veteran's Day concert at the Colonial Theater in Canton, N.C., three 4th Of July parades at Lake Junaluska, N.C. and as the kick-off event for the Canton Labor Day festivities. It has also participated in the Maggie Valley Christmas Parade, assisted Salvation Army kettle collections during the holiday season, and participated as a swing band for the Canton Labor Day Pageant, as well as many other area events.
Over the years a couple of other musical groups were formed that drew its memberships from the Haywood Community Band. These are: The Frog Level Philharmonic, a Dixieland band, and The Signature Winds, a quintet that plays chamber music. Both of these groups are independent of the HCB, and will play at various functions and venues around the community that may not be suited for the entire HCB.

New members are always welcome.
